South Coast Institute for Learning Development
Welcome
The South Coast Institute for Learning Development has grown and developed over the years and we will be celebrating its 20th birthday on the 5th April 2024. We are fortunate to have several wonderful professionals who work individually, having their own private practices on the premises but who also make themselves available to support and assist learners as a multi-disciplinary team. “SCILD” was primarily a Learning and Assessment Centre but then we developed further to include small class Supportive/Remedial Education for Grade 1’s to 7. We are also assisted by 6 teacher interns. The teachers have continued professional development and are very experienced with children who need extra support. We also have Educational therapists on campus who are members of NILD SA. (For more information on NILD Educational therapy, visit Nildsa.
What we do
Various assessments are available and include vocational guidance (aptitude, personality and Intelligence testing) for the purpose of choosing subjects for Matric and for career or educational guidance. We have a Counseling Psychologist as part of our team and she consults on our premises. She also does Cognitive assessments, does the required testing to help organize concessions for learners with learning needs. Concessions include extra time, own venue, readers and scribes for exams.
Our Mission:
Training teachers, developing minds and changing lives. Bridging the gap for those who learn differently.
If a child is apparently quite bright and yet is not achieving, has learning difficulties, a language barrier or needs to catch up on education missed, the bridging classes may offer the perfect solution.
The bridging classes of 2024
SCILD has a Christian ethos and strict code of conduct, including having respect for each other, no matter our differences.
Grades 1-3 learners attend classes at the SCILD Centre from 7:30 to 12:00/13:30 pm daily depending on their grade.
Grade 4-7 learners attend classes from 7:30 – 14:00. We sometimes have Creston – Curro registered learners attending Maths and or English at SCILD according to their timetable. We have a maximum of 10 learners in a class so that they can get a lot more individual attention. We also have a specialist teacher that helps support learners individually or in small groups – especially in literacy.
The learners receive tuition and assessment tasks in English, Afrikaans, Math’s, and cultural subjects. We follow the CAP’S curriculum supported by other educational material to assist learners progress in their academics. The goal is to make small steps of success in order to build a positive self-image and to move towards “bridging the gap”. We also offer Arts and Crafts, and other therapy lessons on the SCILD campus. We offer hockey, soccer, cross county and volleyball in the afternoons or during our PE lessons. Our Soccer team participates in matches against other schools in the area. Some of our learners have represented Creston in UGU or KZN sports teams. We also have a Karate instructor who comes to our campus.
SCILD is adjacent to and readily accessible to Creston College.
SCILD has their own school uniform, which includes Navy shorts, a white golf shirt with the SCILD logo and a navy dry mac and or navy jersey. They also have a navy and red tracksuit for the winter. The children can wear white takkies and white socks or black school shoes. The senior Primary girls have white shirts and blue skirts. There are two sports houses, Falcon (blue) and Eagle (red).
SCILD also has a beautiful LEGO room. Lego provides a way to master many other kinds of emerging skills, to name a few:
• Problem solving
• Persistence & patience
• Planning
• Teamwork & collaboration when playing with others
• Enhanced creativity & experimentation
• Concentration & improved attention
• Self- confidence & Perseverance
Homework clubs and aftercare are also available.
How are children admitted into the SCILD Bridging classes, what criteria should be met and
what are the procedures?
Entrance Requirements and Procedures:
1. Intellectual assessment
The learner having been assessed by a registered Clinical, Counseling or Educational Psychologist on a recognized intellectual assessment should be in the average or above I.Q. range.
The following would contribute to a positive prognosis and progress:
• Parental support and co-operation by following recommendations made.
• Parental supervision with regard to a child’s homework and school programme.
• Even if homework is done at school, we encourage parents to listen to their child read at home as well
as to read to your children. This enhances language development which in turn develops good reasoning and thinking skills.
• Having a good understanding of the extent of scholastic lags on admission.
• Willingness and responsibility of parents to accept guidance and counselling when necessary.
• Learner’s level of motivation and extent of secondary emotional problems or attention difficulties.
2. A legal agreement between SCILD and the parents must be signed and witnessed.
This will cover details such as school fees and Indemnities, health and safety.
Learners who do not meet the Criteria
a) Primary Emotional Problems/ Behaviour problems that interfere with other children’s
learning.
b) Primary Physical Disability
c) Primary Deteriorating Physical Condition
d) Autistic (High Functioning Autistic children will be considered, see note below.)
e) Aphasic
N.B. d) and e) will depend on the severity of problem and the extent to which other learners
in the group may be affected.
3. A full educational assessment (Woodcock Johnson 111/1V) is required in order to establish current level of functioning and as a base line for teaching/ therapy. OR an educational assessment from a qualified Remedial teacher/Psychologist or institution such as the Sherwood Children’s therapy centre.
